Teach English or beginning computer skills to high-school age youth.
Students in this program will be low-income rural youth associated with community
development associations.  In El Salvador, this is La Nueva Esperanza (New Hope), an
association of women from communities around the town of Ilobasco.  In Guatemala, it is the
Asociación de Desarollo Comunitario (ASDECO) (Association for Community Development),
representing 14 communities surrounding the town of Chichicastenango.  Volunteers do not
need to be experienced teachers, but should enjoy teaching and working with youth.

Teach sewing skills and use of sewing machines.
The students in these classes are typically low-income girls and  women who will benefit
economically from being able to create salable clothing.

Why teach English in Central America?
English is required for high school graduation, but instruction is very weak, so our classes help
students academically.  English is a key to employment in the tourist industry, which is an
important component of the GNP of Central American countries.  In addition, much of the written
material that comes with products from other countries is in English, and users and sellers
need to be able to understand these markings.

The Volunteer Experience
Volunteers will work under the guidance of experienced members of Co-partners of
Campesinas.  A typical volunteer trip takes about two weeks, and consists of a brief in-country
orientation followed by five to seven days of working .  A brief orientation and materials for
teaching English will be provided in Alexandria, Virginia or in-country.  Volunteers will stay in
guest houses or local hotels and eat in local restaurants.

Volunteers pay their own expenses.  These include airfare, around $600, local transportation,
which ranges from $60 to $200, and daily expenses of about $35 per day per person.  The total
cost of the experience is in the neighborhood of $1000.

You’d like to volunteer, but you don’t speak Spanish, or your Spanish is rusty?
Guatemala has many wonderful language schools.  We have used APPE – Academia de
Profesores Privados de Español located in Antigua, Guatemala, www.appeschool.com, which
provides 30 hours of individual instruction for $150 per week.  Our experience has been that for
an individual with rusty high school Spanish, a week-long refresher course is sufficient for
participation in our programs.  Participants without any previous Spanish need two or three
weeks of intensive classes.
